How and what we learn

“The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child’s natural desire to learn”

- Dr Maria Montessori

Early Years Foundation Stage

The Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage is mandatory for all early years’ settings. The framework sets the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five.

There are four guiding principles and seven areas of ‘learning and development’ that must shape educational programmes in early years settings.

We aim to give the very best start; the kind any parent would wish for their child.  Something unique, something special, a truly magical beginning…

Enabling Environments

Our indoor classroom embraces principles of Montessori. Each area of provision is set out to allow children the freedom to explore and investigate. The specific nature of the provision keeps resources organized and allows children to access resources easily and responsibly. Fletcher’s Field provides year round inspiration for curious minds as we interact with nature and observe changes throughout the seasons. Each environment promotes learning, independence and creativity. They allow our children the freedom to choose, the motivation to engage and the support to succeed. Learning is enhanced wherever possible with quality literature to deepen knowledge and understanding; additionally, extend children’s vocabulary.

Risk taking and Responsibility

Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Taking risks and risky play are key elements of a Forest School Ethos. Children benefit from testing the boundaries by learning to order the rules of engagement in life for when they grow, mature and develop.

What is Forest School?

Friendship and belonging

Our fabulous school promotes friendship and kindness as part of its values. We are a small community and look after each other. Friendships and people are important to us. Through our experiences and play we learn to take other people feelings and opinions into account. Our safe, happy school makes us feel like we are at home – a place we feel we belong.

Core books and quality literature

Our aim is for every child to experience the pleasures and delights of great literature… Click here for a list of our core books and quality literature.
